Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) works to protect, and prevent the abuse of, vulnerable older adults. There is a wide range of information available on the website and a helpline available.The UK freephone number is 0808 808 8141. In the Republic of Ireland the number is 1800 940 010.
Age UK
Age UK has produced a booklet that is written for older people who are themselves suffering from, or are at risk of being abused. 'Protecting Yourself' explains what peoples rights are and who to contact to get support. To order a copy call 020 7239 1845 or email adviceleaflets@helptheaged.org.uk

Alzheimer's Society
The Alzheimer's Society has published a leaflet that is designed to help tackle poor dementia care in hospitals. It is designed to help hospital staff better understand the needs of people with dementia. This is Me is a simple and practical tool that carers can give to staff when a person with dementia goes into hospital. It contains information about the person behind the dementia: for example, what they like to eat and drink, what name they like to be called, if they have a tendency to walk about, what might make them agitated and help them to relax.

Alzheimer's Society hosts the website for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia
The new 'Living Well' campaign employs real people with dementia who declare I have dementia - I also have a life to educate the public about the condition and demonstrate the simple things everyone can do to help people live well with dementia. Information packs and a resource pack simple ways to help - 5 ways to help someone living with dementia are available from the Living Well campaign website.
British Geriatric Society
A group of charities and professionals have produced a poster and flyer which highlight what should be standard practice with regard to 'Dignity and Respect', 'Communication', 'Eating and Drinking', 'Mobility' and 'Use of the Toilet'. The resources are designed to encourage all those caring for older people to treat them as individuals by listening to them and their relatives when appropriate. British Institute of Human Rights
The British Institute of Human Rights has produced a guide for older people.
CareChecker
CareChecker is an independent service that promotes person centred thinking and working within care settings. The service is delivered by people who have significant experience of providing and inspecting care provision. It aims to help ensure that children and adults being supported within care services are valued unconditionally as individuals and have their wellbeing promoted and safeguarded. It does this by supporting everyone to listen to people receiving care, in order to see the service through their eyes. The service can be usedby service providers, commissioners and representatives of service users.

The NMC has published guidance on the care of older people. There is a leaflet for older people and one for nurses. There is also guidance for the public on how to complain about a nurse
Older People's Commissoner for Wales
The role of the Older People’s Commissioner is to ensure that the interests of older people in Wales, who are aged 60 or more, are safeguarded and promoted. The Commissioner will provide strategic leadership and act as an ambassador and authority on older people’s issues and will speak on their behalf. In March the Commissioner published her first review of the care of older people in hospital. She has now published an update which includes press coverage and the next steps in the review process
Patients Association
The Patients Association was set up more than 40 years ago to promote the voice of patients in healthcare. It offers patients an opportunity to share their experiences of health services. It uses the knowledge gained from patients to work with the NHS and other healthcare providers in improving services.
Patient Opinion
Patient Opinion is all about enabling patients to share their experiences of health care, and by doing so help other patients and perhaps even change the NHS. As well as allowing everyone to see what patients are saying about their services, it also offers a way to feed the experience of patients back to the NHS so that their insights and ideas can be put to good use.

Royal College of Nursing
The Royal College of Nursing has set out what patients, families and carers can expect from nursing staff. The publication, entitled the principles of nursing practice spells out eight core aspects of nursing. The Principles range across all nursing settings and apply to the whole nursing team. They range from nursing staff being vigilant about risk to being conscientious in reporting the things they are concerned about. Nursing staff have a responsibility to have up-to-date knowledge and skills and also to involve patients and their families in decisions to help them make informed choices about their treatment and care. The Principles identify the importance to nursing staff of dignity and humanity in care.
Samaritans
The Samaritans aims to benefit society by improving people’s emotional health in order to create a greater sense of well being. It provides a 24-hour source of support on the telephone, by email, by letter or face to face, we also work in the local community, visiting workplaces, schools and prisons. You can talk to someone day or night. People call for many reasons. For example, relationship and family problems, loss, including loss of a job, a friend or a family member through bereavement, job related stress etc
Social Care Institute for Excellence
Helping you through a hospital stay: Information booklet for older people helps older people to understand and manage the feelings, anxieties and concerns they may have when they are entering or leaving hospital. It suggests how they can be involved in their treatment and care, and in planning for return home. The booklet has been written and developed with the input of an advisory group of older people who have firsthand experience of going into hospital.
University of Glamorgan - Off Sick Project
Off Sick focuses specifically on the stories and experiences of family members who support someone with a severe illness. These voices are seldom heard and that is something that researchers want to address. In particular, they are interested in narratives and experiences that feature or focus on visits to hospital and encounters with the official ‘institutions’ of medicine. If you currently have or previously had a family member suffering from a severe illness, and you visited them in hospital or helped them get there as either an in-patient or an out-patient, and would like to contribute to the pproject, then click here.
Welsh Assembly Government
The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) has published a public information leaflet about Continuing NHS Healthcare for Adults. Click here to download a copy. WAG has also produced a flow chart about the continuing healthcare process. It is designed to enhance frontline staff's understanding of the process so that they can better inform patient's realives and carers. It is also designed to enhance communication.
