Action on Elder Abuse

Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) works to protect, and prevent the abuse of, vulnerable older adults. AEA was established in 1993 by a group of practitioners from health and social care, and by academics and representatives of the voluntary sector who were concerned about the lack of information and assistance for those who were abused or were at risk of abusing.  It addresses abuse within people's own homes (whether by family, friends or paid staff), within sheltered housing, and within care homes and hospitals. AEA operates across the four nations of the United Kingdom.  It also provides support within Ireland

Age UK

Age UK has recently merged. A number of reports and resourses have been produced around the issue of dignified care.

Bouncers at mealtimes – whatever next?

Age Concern's viral marketing campaign is aimed at tackling the problem of malnutrition among older patients in hospitals. The charity has unleashed 3 short clips on YouTube that show how simple solutions - like red trays and protected mealtimes - can help to improve nutritional standards on the wards

Alzheimer's Society

The Alzheimer's Society has published a leaflet that is designed to help tackle poor dementia care in hospitals. It is designed to help hospital staff better understand the needs of people with dementia. This is Me is a simple and practical tool that carers can give to staff when a person with dementia goes into hospital. It contains information about the person behind the dementia: for example, what they like to eat and drink, what name they like to be called, if they have a tendency to walk about, what might make them agitated and help them to relax.

It has also published a:

  • guide to reducing the use of antipsychotic drugs for people with dementia
  • best practice guide for health and social care professionals

Alzhimer's Society hosts the website for the All Party Parlaimentary Group on Dementia

Amanda Waring Campaign

Actress Amanda Waring has been a passionate campaigner for older people’s rights for the past five years. She has produced a powerfully emotional film What do you see? based on a poem by Phyllis McCormack and a film called Home. There is a training pack to suppor the films. Amanda has recently produced two new films. The Big Adventure is an introduction to her series of end of life films and No Regrets provides startling revelations about caring, grieving and dying.

British Geriatrics Society

The Behind Closed Doors Campaign aims to raise awareness that people, whatever their age and physical ability, should be able to choose to use the toilet in private in all care settings. it has also produced a respurce entitled Privacy and Dignityin Continence Care

A group of charities and professionals have produced a poster and flyer which highlight what should be standard practice with regard to 'Dignity and Respect', 'Communication', 'Eating and Drinking', 'Mobility' and 'Use of the Toilet'. The resources are designed to encourage all those caring for older people to treat them as individuals by listening to them and their relatives when appropriate. A new report has been published. It is a quest for quality in care homes 

British Institute of Human Rights

British Institute of Human Rights has been focusing some of its activity on human rights in healthcare. It has been running a project since October 2006, with an overall aim of supporting the use of human rights based approaches in improving health and social care.

Cardiff University

Cardiff University has produced some educational materials intended to stimulate thinking and reflection about dignity and older people. Dignity & Older Europeans: a multidisciplinary workbook can be downloaded here.

Care Checker

CareChecker is an independent service that promotes person centred thinking and working within care settings. The service is delivered by people who have significant experience of providing and inspecting care provision. It aims to help ensure that children and adults being supported within care services are valued unconditionally as individuals and have their wellbeing promoted and safeguarded. It does this by supporting everyone to listen to people receiving care, in order to see the service through their eyes. The service can be usedby service providers, commissioners and representatives of service users.

Care Forum Wales

Care Forum Wales has produced a dignity in care charter. The aim of the charter is to describe the standards and quality of service that people should expect to receive from a member of Care Forum Wales and to ensure that the services are responsive to people's needs and wishes, and to respect dignity at all times. Care Council for Wales

The Code of Practice for Social Workers can be accessed here. It sets down the standards of conduct expected of social care workers. It will ensure that workers know what is expected of them and that the public know what standards of conduct they can expect from care workers.

City University

Best practice for older people in acute care settings is a new resource to help guide and support nurses and others working with older people in acute settings.  A set of evidence-based best practice statements has been developed which update the 2001 Standing Nursing and Midwifery Committee (SNMAC) guidelines originally published alongside the National Service Framework for Older People.

Dementia Services Development Centre

The centre, at the University of Sterling has produced a DVD and book which are designed to help care workers when looking after people with dementia. Oh good, lunch is coming is a DVD designed to help staff understand why people with dementia sometimes eat poorly. It provides suggestions about what action to take and gives examples of good practice. Some basic information is also provided on key issues such as swallowing. Food and nutrition for people with dementia is designed to raise awareness of the eating and drinking difficulties faced by people with dementia. It provides details of problems likely to be encountered on a daily basis and outlines practical ways to overcome them.

Department of Health Dignity Campaign

The website contains information about the English dignity campaign. There is the facility to sign up as a dignity champion. There is a dsicussion forum for champions and you can join twitter to share  activities in which you are involved to promote dignified care.Public perceptions of privacy and dignity in hospitals - Department of Health publication 

Confidence in Caring offers a shared language and shared understanding of what caring means for older people. The guidelines are based wholly on the feedback and input of patients and nurses working in acute hospital wards

Devices for Dignity

Devices for Dignity is a National pilot Department of Health programme. It has been set up to drive forward innovative new products, processes and services to help people with debilitating conditions deal with their daily challenges. Its work is focused on:

  • Assistive technologies
  • Urinary continence management
  • Renal technologies

Anyone, including members of the public are encouraged to get in touch if they have an idea for an invention that fits their themes and you want to discuss how to take it forward.

Effective Older People Care.Org

EffectiveOlderPeopleCare.org is a continually updated source of current best evidence from Cochrane systematic reviews which relate to the health care of older people. It has been developed in an attempt to break down the barriers that prevent health professionals keeping up to date with rapidly increasing volumes of high quality research, and to provide clear evidence-based answers to the clinical questions asked by health professionals working in the field.

Food in hospitals database

A food in hospitals database has been developed, providing more information about work going on in Wales around food provision and nutritional care in hospitals.

The 18th report of the Joint Committee of Human Rights examines how human rights principles can be applied to ensure that older people in hospitals and care homes are treated with greater dignity and respect.

KT Equal is a consortium of UK researchers dedicated to extending quality life for older and disabled people.

Liberty

The Liberty guide to human rights provides support to individuals and organisations who wish to understand and enforce their rights under the Human Rights Act 1998.

Many Happy Returns

1940s and 1950s Chatterbox cards are designed to be used by younger people (anyone under 65 years old) with those over 65 years old. Sarah Reed, who runs Many Happy Returns also facilitates Real Communication workshops, helping carers improve their skills in reminiscence, empathic engagement and enquiry, active listening and life story gathering.

Ministry of Justice

The Ministry of Justice has some useful information related to human rights. There is a guide designed for officials in public authorities to assist them in working with the Human Rights Act 1998 and a recently published document entitled 'the human rights framework as a tool for regulators and inspectorates'. National Council for Palliative Care

Care to Learn is a training resource that is relevant to all staff caring for people at the end of life: in particular, those working in care homes, housing organisations, other community settings and hospitals. It will also benefit staff who deliver support and education to other services.  Care to Learn has now been expanded with a brand new chapter on dementia. New Dynamics on Ageing

New Dynamics on Ageing has published the findings of a longtitudinal qualitative study of older people's experiences of support and care. The study found that people were often surprised by the impact that illness and growing old had on their lives. Their sense of 'self' was affected by the limitations imposed by their age and illnesses. The participants' views show how, with the struggle to maintain day-to-day activities, their dignity can quickly and easily be lost.

NHS Institute for Innovation & Improvement

Little things make a big difference: valuing the patient experience

This resource has been designed to act as a gateway for NHS Scotland staff to support the enhancement of patient experience. It has been designed to enable quick access to resources, support continuous professional development or to use as a resource with patients and carers.

Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)

The Nursing & Midwifery Council has published guidance on the care of older people. There is guidance for nurses and for the general public.

NMC has launched a series of short films and an online resource hub to help nurses and midwives protect patients and their families from abuse, including poor practice.  The films Safeguarding adults. If you don't do something, who will? - is supported by a suite of training tools including a PowerPoint presentation which can be adapted to promote local policies. 

Patients Association

The Patient's Association report Patients Not Numbers, People Not statistics provides 16 first hand accounts of patient care in hospital.

Queen's Nursing Institute

The Queen's Nursing Institute is the charity dedicated to improving nursing care in the community.

Remember Me, Remember You

Remember Me, Remember You is a free social networking site for people living with dementia, family, friends and professionals.

Royal College of Nursing

The Royal College of Nursing launched a dignity campaign in 2008 and has produced various resources for its members. It has also recently launched a human rights e-learning resource.

RNIB

This patient focus guide is the first ever guide jointly produced by Action for Blind People, The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and Royal National Institute of the Blind, the three leading sight loss charities in the UK. It should be read by anyone who comes into contact with patients and visitors with sight problems in a medical or therapeutic setting.

Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE)

SCIE has developed a Dignity in Care guide for people working in health and social care. Based on research that indicates that there are eight main factors that promote dignity in care, the guide provides concise practical information, practice examples and additional resources. SCIE also hosts the Dignity in Care network.

Social Services Improvement Agency Wales

The Social Services Improvement Agency Wales website provides examples of noteworthy practice in relation to dignified care.

Sonas aPc

Sonas aPc train people to carry out therapeutic activities with older people who have Alzheimer's, other forms of dementia or any condition that brings about communication impairment.

UK Sepsis Trust

The UK Sepsis Trust promotes awareness to professionals and endorses and support projects which aim to improve the early recognition and treatment of sepsis in the community and in hospitals.

UNISON

Guidance on duty of care for healthcare support workers

UNISON provides a useful guidance document for Healthcare Support Workers entitled 'the duty of care: a handbook for healthcare staff carrying out their duty of care to patients, colleagues and themselves'.

The Well-being Zone has been developed to help people interested in promoting well-being to form an online community to support each other and learn from one another

Welsh Assembly Government

Continuing Healthcare

The Welsh Assembly Government has published a leaflet for the public which explains the Continuing NHS Healthcare Care process for adults in Wales. Click here to download a copy.

Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers

the Welsh Assembly Government has published a Code of Conduct for Healhcare Support Workers and a Code of Practice for employers in Wales has been published. The documents provide a comprehensive summary of existing expectations of healthcare support workers and the responsibilities of NHS employers in supporting healthcare workers in order to ensure that thehighest quality patient centered care is maintained.

New Complaints Process

From 1 April 2011, the way in which NHS organisations in Wales deal with complaints, claims and incidents is changing.  These new arrangements will be called Putting Things Right and will require a different approach to dealing with concerns.  NHS staff will receive training over the next few months to support and encourage the sorting out of problems as they arise and being open if something has gone wrong.
