Action on Elder Abuse works to protect, and prevent the abuse of vulnerable older adults. There is a wide range of information available on the website and a helpline available for residents, relatives and carers. The UK freephone number is 0808 808 8141. Age UK
My Home Life is an initiative aimed at improving the quality of life of those who are living, dying, visiting and working in care homes for older people live that is focused on improving the quality of care. The initiative has been running in England for some time. It has recently been launched in Wales.
Care Forum Wales
Care Forum Wales has produced a dignity in care charter. The aim of the charter is to describe the standards and quality of service that people should expect to receive from a member of Care Forum Wales and to ensure that the services are responsive to people's needs and wishes, and to respect dignity at all times. Frameworks4Change
Frameworks4Change has produced a DVD and training pack entitled Knowing you Matter. The DVD calls for dignity, compassion, kindness and respect to be placed at the heart of care. Older people, and their loved ones talk franlly and courageously about their experiences of losing identity and power as they move into a stage of their lifes where they require paid care and support. Southern Cross Nursing Homes
The care provider Southern Cross is offering the helpline to residents in all of its 735 care homes in the UK. It is the first scheme of its kind, and the company is the only major care provider offering such a service. The helpline is staffed by trained advisors from the charity Action on Elder Abuse.

Note:If a Local Authority or Local Health Board places a person in a home, then it must take appropriate steps to ensure that the person is safe.If a patient is discharged home but is vulnerable to abuse, a public authority must manage the abuse e.g. the Protection of Vulnerable Adult (POVA) process.
