Barbara Hodkinson is a member of the public who has worked tirelessly to improve the safety and well-being of people with dementia in the acute hospital setting. She has been successful in introducing a scheme, which people with dementia (or their carers) can opt into. It offers discreet identification of people with memory-impairment, backed up by a five-point plan for all staff to follow when they see the Butterfly symbol.
The scheme is fully up-and-running throughout Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, with very positive feedback. It is also now in place at Airedale NHS Trust and is to be introduced at four further trusts, in the Midlands and London and others are currently working towards implementation. Barbara would be very happy to support any hospitals wishing to introduce The Butterfly Scheme and would be glad to send out information to dementia champions.
