CHRE's review of the NMC
Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:53

On 24 January 2012 we wrote to Harry Cayton, the head of the Council for Health Regulatory Excellence asking what reassurance it could give to the public and the nursing profession folowing the recent departures of senior Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) executives . We have received the following response:

"We have of course expressed concern in the past that the NMC was not fulfilling its functions to the standard patients and professionals have a right to expect. It has made some progress in improving its performance and we continue to work closely with it. I have no reason to believe that the council and the interim chief executive and management team are not maintaining its work and ensuring it is committed to public protection.

We will welcome evidence to our review from people with experience of the NMC. People can submit comments through a dedicated email address set up for the review at nmcreview@chre.org.uk and further information can be found on our website

Terms of Reference for Strategic Review of NMC were also forwarded with the correspondence.

Dignity and the Eden Alternative
Wednesday, 11 January 2012 18:53

We have been asked to raise awareness of the Eden Alternative. It is a philosophy of care that can be applied in all settings but was specifically designed to be applied for the elderly living in long term nursing and care homes. It aims to address the loneliness, helplessness and boredom so often suffered by many in these situations. It is a common sense approach that advocates, in the first instance, meaningful relationships between staff and residents. Dignity, privacy and respect are core values that we all want for ourselves and for those for whom we care. Eden Alternative education teaches all those concerned in the delivering and receiving of care how to put this into action. For more information email june@eden-alternative.co.uk or visit the Eden Alternatve website.

In today's Telegraph A Dignified Revolution responds to the publication of the NHS Future Forum report that has been published.

The Butterfly Scheme is recommended by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
Friday, 16 December 2011 17:39

The Royal Society of Psychitarists report published today recommends that the Senior Clinical Lead for Dementia should implement systems of good practice to ensure that staff can identify people with dementia on the ward/during care and treatment and can provide an appropriate response to their needs (e.g. "Butterfly Scheme"). The Butterfly scheme is mentioned again in other sections of the report and references the Dignified revolution website. Whilst we are great supporters of the scheme and provide a link from our website we would like to make it easy for you to find that link. So, click here to gain direct access to the Butterfly scheme.

Sharing concerns and lobbying for dignified care
Thursday, 15 December 2011 17:12

We have been contacted by the Chair of the Durham Branch of the NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF) who has indictaed that a nunber of its members are concerned about the care of vulnerable elderly people in hospital. It is therefroe proactively raising concerns and has reported the following activity:

  • the Director of the NHSRF is meeting with Sir Stephen Moss on the 5January  ( Chair of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust) and  contacted our Patron Ken Jarrold CBE, which started our involvement.
  • the large Bexley Branch members have written to the Department of Health outlining their concerns
  • we have made contact with yourself, and also Professional Concern
  • I have contacted my M.P. for Durham/Derwentside Mrs Pat Glass, who took copies of the correspondence to and from the Bexley Branch to the “House” as she had never heard of the NHSRF, the Dig Revolution, or the Professional Concern
  • I reported to the NHSRF National Council on the 26October in London about our concerns, and all of the trustees were 100% behind any initiative which could hopefully get to the people who could make a difference.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board's drive to maintain dignity in care
Wednesday, 14 December 2011 12:22

A couple of weeks ago we met with the Director of Nursing from Aneurin Bevan Local Health Board (ABHB) in Gwent.  During the meeting we discussed the work that is being undertaken to ensure that patient dignity and respect is maintained at all times.

As part of this work the health board has produced a DVD based on the poem, "The Crabbit Old Woman", This is a well known poem which has been utilised by many organisations in the voluntary sector universities and the NHS to reinforce the importance of maintaining dignity. It is a very powerful poem, that stirs a range of emotions in the listener.

There is a professional DVD about the poem, starring Virginia McKenna, which is excellent. However, the Health Board wanted to use the poem to highlight that patients are individuals and that privacy and dignity are fundamental components of care, with this being everyone's responsibility. The original poem, of course, focuses on nurses and nursing. But staff at the health board thought that it would be meaningful to have the poem recited by a range of health board staff from board bembers (to include the chairman & chief executive) to domestics, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and an accountant.

The health boards DVD has been played to a number of audiences and the feedback has been extemely positive. For futher information email Rachel.Manley@wales.nhs.uk

The final line of the poem: "Look Closer See Me" has been embraced as the health boards Dignity Campaign slogan.

Wales Committee Human Rights Seminar
Wednesday, 23 November 2011 17:21

Today we gave a presentation to the Wales Committe for Human Rights at the Equality & Human Rights Commission in Cardiff. The purpose of the day was to build capacity and confidence in current human rights issues that come up on a day to day basis. We were asked to speak about A Dignified Revolution and the work we are doing to promote the human rights of older people in hospital.

The event was extremely timely as the Equality & Human Rights Commission published the findings of its review of home care for the elderly.
